Pablo PIG-Casso and Tie-Dye Piggy

Pablo PIG-Casso is the name I chose for one of the two pigs that I decorated for Adopt-a-Pig. We ARTsisters were asked to volunteer our time and talents to benefit this worthy cause.

I took photocopies of Picasso's work and collaged them all over the piggy's body. In the face area is a photo of the artist. I think it turned out rather well. I had fun making it. How could I not? It was made not for money or profit but with love. My two pigs, (they are actually piggy banks) along with others that were decorated by my fellow ARTsisters will be auctioned off for charity sometime around Labor Day. I don't have the info of when/where yet. Hopefully ARTsister Sandi Lovitz can get that info out. She coordinated the project.

Tie-Dye Piggy came from the influence of the folk fest where many folks love to wear bright tie-dye clothing. I thought it would be fun to paint a tie dye with acrylic. It was!
I believe Adopt-a-pig has a website and a face book page. You'll hafta google it though. I'm too sleepy right now. Gotta get to bed and have some little piggy dreams....  oink oink .... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Some more fest photos - Graphics crew work

Shown here are a few more of my photos from this year's folk fest. This first pic informs you of the theme in case you didn't know it.

These banners were created by Laura, one of our crew members, and hung in the place of the old main gate. The structure was torn down a few years ago. . . I still miss that wonderful breeze that used to waft through there. One could be on the shade on a hot day, but could stay cool and always find a breeze under there!

An army of butterflies invaded fest land this year, thanks to Jeremy's genius. One even landed on the top of the big banjo!

Here are some butterflies in the making.

An increase in wind prompted Bugsy to tighten the ropes on the big guitar.
It was the first appearance of this banjo, Casey's baby. And the mandolin up there on the upper left of this photo was Dave's creation, with a little help from Amy D!.

Thursday pre-fest. Intermittent sprinkling happening.
Deadlines are looming. Gotta get done!
Saved by the plastic tent!

49th PHiladelphia Folk Fest

A Philly Folk fest fan, I camp there and help paint signs and murals every year with my family. This year's Philly Folk Fest (the 49th) went pretty well.  Tom and I had to miss a bit of Saturday's music due to college move-in day, but that's the way it goes. Had some rain sunday, but it wasn't too bad. (It was nothing, compared to the mudfest of last year!)
We camped up there all week to prepare the murals and signs for the festival.
Here are some pix

Angelic faces making andels wings

This year's theme was "Philadelphia"

love those Graphics folks! day or night, they're ready to work!
We work on, rain or shine
Young butterjlies waiting to fly
Electrifying Camping gate
Amidst all the music, all is calm....

Go, Gene!

The Philly daily News, the Zoo, Schuylkill River...

But if I pull this wire, won't that butterfly leap into the trees?!

A Graphics smaile is the best folk fest smile ever!  i

Cyanotype Workshop at Main Line Art Center - Blog Post #2

As promised, here are more pix that will show you what went down at the Main Line Art Center in Haverford, PA last Friday. The kids and I had a great time making cyanotype prints!

Here is Dan, the camp director, giving me a very nice introduction to the campers.

After briefly explaining the process to the kids, I began to lay down leaves onto my pretreated paper
Exposing in sunlight. Just as I laid it in the sun, this cloud moved in and gave us shade! Shrugging my shoulders, I explained that that was part of the process. You can't always count on the sun being there! Luckily, before long, the cloud moved on. More clouds took turns coming and going as time went on!

Here, I am showing them the color change to look for, halfway through exposure.

After running around the grounds, collecting found objects from nature (grass, leaves, stones, flowers,...) here the kids are composing their own designs on their papers.

Exposure time!

And finally, developing their cyanotypes in the water bath.

The campers all seemed to have a wonderful time. I know I did!

PS-Sending out a big thank-you to the adult counselor/helper who agreed to photograph the event with my camera so I could post this.  I'm so sorry, I didn't catch her name!

Philadelphia Folk Festival Mural Creation Has Begun!

This past weekend I was painting up at the folkfest site, working on this year's murals for the main gate. The theme this year is Philadelphia.

Here's a sneak peak at what awaits you if you plan to go!

The left part of this set of 4x8' panels shows a giant newspaper (the Philadelphia Daily News) on which the ticket prices will be hand-lettered. Then, to the right of that, we'll feature animals for the Philadelphia Zoo. Past that, will be a view of the Schuylkill River and some crew rowers.
Should be a good fest this year. Are you planning to come?

This weekend....

I was asked to again hold a workshop tomorrow demonstrating the cyanotype process for the kids at the Main Line Art Center's Art Camp. It was loads of fun the first time. I expect the same again. Even the weather looks like it is going to cooperate and give us another nice sunny day!

Later in the weekend you will find me playing with paint up at the fest site working on the main gate murals with some of my Graphics cohorts. The theme: Philadelphia. On the drawing board are many Philly icons... Boat House Row, Ben Franklin bridge, the Art Museum, the Zoo,... oh, fun in the sun! ...or rain, whatever the case may be.
