Pricing Artwork

Yesterday I left a few new pieces at the framer's. Getting ready for a couple group shows. I wasn't able to get in any creative time for artwork, but I did do some figuring work on my pricing. Since I have a couple pieces that are much larger than my normal working size, I felt it was necessary to revisit this area. I have found that for an artist to determine a fair price for a piece is not an easy job. One must figure in many factors: one's labor time invested in creating the piece, the cost of materials used, framing materials, other factors, ... it's enough to make one's head spin!  But it's necessary if I want to feel my art has a fair price on it. I believe I am very close to solving the problem with a formula with which I can use for pieces from this point forward.

An Angel in My Life

There's an angel in my life who has made me smile today.

My lungs can now breathe beep and clean, free of worrisome tightness. I love when the magic of love spreads wide and touches souls. Although I still have zillions of things to do, I am back in my art groove, which is where I need to be. Working on all my undone things, one of which is publishing my newsletter. I'm very close to having January's ready to send. (Yeah, I know, it's almost February! Hey! I'm tryin!)

If you want to find out all the details about the New Blue, sign up for my free newsletter!

Quick! Before I send it out! Once it's out, it's out!

Can time slow down please?

I sure do wish time could slow down!
I have had to postpone my creative ventures the past couple days.
The bottom line. The green stuff that pays the rent (mortgage, whatever) is currently demanding my focus. (Or should I say the LACK OF that green stuff!) ..... Juggling art and a regular life is sometimes SO HARD! It is NOT a piece of cake. That's all I am going to say. (Don't want to whine to y'all!)

No time for much right now.... Lots on my mind,. no time to share. so sorry...
Try your best to stay colorful!

One question I have for you: If you were to want to buy some art, what kind of picture would speak to you? For what would you look? Realistic images of everyday items? Imaginary landscapes? Realistic landscapes? Colorfully rendered botanical images? Black n white drawings of people you know? Colorful integrations of all of the above?
Let me know please. I have many interests, my artist's muse seems to have multiple personalities! I enjoy trying many things.

Re: My Newsletter---it's on my list I promise! I haven't had the time to finish January's newsletter!!!! (It will feature the herb Rosemary) . . . if you haven't yet signed up to receive it and would like to, please click here.

Don't want to bum you out; just know that I am having challenges and that I am doing my best to beat them! . . . my poor camera is screaming to be heard! It contains many pix of recent art... i just cannot manage the time now! So sorry... working on it ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ !

Learning the PanPastel Process

I have been very busy pastellin' lately.

I am totally enjoying the process of using these new pan pastels of mine! Fairly new to the art market, they are oh so soft, softer than the softest pastel stick I have ever held in my hand. The applicators do a nice job of smoothly putting on color. Everything has drawbacks though; I think this medium's drawback is the difficulty to create very small, sharp points and edges. I am discovering ways around that though. It's what experimenting is all about!

When I get more time, I will post pictures of all this online somewhere (maybe on my Facebook page, maybe on this blog,...   we'll see.

Attn: fellow artists:
If you have any experiences with using pan pastels, please share your thoughts about the medium in the comments section. They are very new, so I don't know if there are many people working with them yet, but I hope the interest will grow and spread. I am enjoying the panpastel process immensely!

Odilon Redon and the Two Halves of our Brains

I was taking a much needed mini-break from some drudgery-type work that I must do and I found an interesting article on wetcanvas.com.

It was a little lesson on how to do a pastel painting. He used a portrait which was done by the French painter, Odilon Redon. His name was mentioned at a recent critique which I attended. One of my fellow ARTsisters suggested I study his work since my recent pastels had similar qualities. We both seem to be interested in magical environments and images which contain mystery and fantasy.
The article went through some basic steps one could follow to create a pastel portrait similar to his. Then, the author began to discuss in depth the concept of dealing with the right and left hemispheres of our brains. Quite interesting indeed! If you want to read it, here is a link.

I had bought a book many years ago called "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain." Back then I was knee deep in diapers and toddler toys, and I didn't have the time nor the energy to read it. Unfortunately I have since misplaced it, so I will have to wait even longer to read it. But it will stay on my "want to read someday" list of books!

And now I must get back to my drudgery work!
How about you? Read any good books lately? Please share your insights!
